In Flanders the reversing meter has been phased out. Anyone with a digital meter will no longer see it run backwards when solar panels feed electricity into the grid. As a result, the energy you generate in excess during the day yields much less than it used to.
That is precisely why self-consumption is becoming more important. With a home battery you store your surplus and use it later, instead of feeding it into the grid at a low rate. The capacity tariff also rewards more even consumption, which a battery or smart control can help absorb.
