Using energy more smartly with control and EMS

An energy management system, or EMS for short, brings those pieces together. It knows what you generate, what you consume and steers your appliances to the moment when that delivers the most benefit.

In Flanders, the meter no longer runs backwards for those who have a digital meter. As a result, solar energy that you feed into the grid yields less than it used to.

Using your own energy therefore becomes more important. A home battery or smart control system helps you to use your own generated energy later instead of selling it to the grid cheaply. An EMS is the brain between your generation, your consumers and, if applicable, your battery. It continuously measures how much energy is available and decides on that basis when each device is allowed to run.

Electricity you generate yourself and use yourself does not have to be bought. So the more of your generation you use yourself, the less you draw from the grid. An EMS steers your consumers as much as possible towards the moments when your panels are producing.

If you have a home battery, that interplay becomes even more important. The system chooses whether energy is best used straight away, stored, or kept for later in the day.

Not every appliance needs to draw power at the same time. A heat pump, a boiler, a charging point or large household appliances are ideal loads to control, because it usually does not matter whether they run an hour earlier or later.
