Imagine: your washing machine, your heat pump and your car all demand power at the same time. Without control, that can exceed the limit of your connection. Dynamic charging with your charging point solves this by continuously adjusting the charging capacity to what is still available in the home.
Dynamic charging, also known as smart charging, measures in real time how much power the rest of your home is using and charges your car with what is left over. This keeps you within your available capacity and in many cases avoids an expensive upgrade of your connection.
This principle is called load balancing: via a meter, the charging point receives information about how much power the home is using, and adjusts the charging power up or down accordingly. If household consumption peaks, the car charges more slowly; if consumption drops, charging speeds up again.
This way you do not exceed the limit of your connection and you take into account the capacity tariff, which rewards more even consumption. Instead of short, high peaks, you spread your consumption out.
If you have solar panels, the charging point can give priority to the electricity you generate yourself. The charging point then mainly charges when the panels produce more than the home consumes, so that you use that energy yourself instead of feeding it into the grid.
That is interesting now that the reversing meter has been phased out and self consumption has become more important. How much you gain from this depends on your consumption pattern, your panels and the weather, so we assess that on a case by case basis.
For dynamic charging, we install a meter that monitors your home's consumption and connect it to the charging point. Not every charging point supports this to the same extent, so the choice of device plays a role.
If you want both to control based on your connection and to give priority to solar panels, we combine those functions. During the site visit, we examine your installation and propose a working setup.
