The question of what capacity of home battery you need comes up often. Salespeople sometimes point straight to the largest model, as if more kWh is always better. That is not how it works. The right capacity follows from how you consume and how much you generate, and that combination is different for everyone.
We take you through the common sizes, from 5 kWh through 10 kWh to 20 kWh, and show you how to make a choice that fits. A battery that you rarely get full or empty is money sitting still. One that is too small leaves generated energy unused.
The capacity in kWh indicates how much energy the battery can store. A system of 5 kWh holds less than one of 10 kWh, and 20 kWh goes above that. More kWh means that you have a larger buffer to use generated energy later.
That buffer only makes sense if your consumption and generation fill and empty it. A family with solar panels and a heat pump consumes differently from a couple without large consumers. That is why the number alone says nothing. It is about the match with your daily pattern.
We look at your annual consumption and, more importantly, at when you consume. Those who are at home a lot during the day use generated solar energy straight away and need less storage. Those who mainly consume in the evening get more out of a battery that stores the day's production for later.
Your generation also counts. If you have a substantial solar panel installation, there is more surplus to store during the day. If your panels have limited output, a large battery will not fill up and you pay for space that remains empty. Now that the reversing meter has been phased out, self-consumption through storage becomes more attractive, but only if the capacity matches what you generate.
The temptation to choose a large capacity is understandable, but oversizing delivers nothing extra. A battery you never fully use takes longer to pay for itself. The capacity tariff also rewards more even consumption, which plays a role in how you deploy the battery.
