A home battery with solar panels bridges that difference: the energy you generate during the day and do not use straight away, you store for the evening or the night. That is how you increase your self-consumption.
That combination has become more interesting now that the reversing meter has been phased out. Where your surplus used to be offset automatically, it now pays more to use the energy you generate yourself instead of feeding it back.
