Solar panels generate electricity when the sun shines, and that is not always the moment when you are using it. A home battery with solar panels bridges that difference: the energy you generate during the day and do not use straight away, you store for the evening or the night. That is how you increase your self-consumption.
That combination has become more interesting now that the reversing meter has been phased out. Where your surplus used to be offset automatically, it now pays more to use the energy you generate yourself instead of feeding it back. Without a battery you only use solar energy at the moment your panels are producing. Whatever you do not consume at that moment goes to the grid. With a battery you capture that surplus and use it later, for example when you cook or run the washing machine in the evening.

With a battery, the additional question arises of how it connects to the installation: some systems use a separate battery inverter, others use a hybrid inverter that manages both the panels and the battery.
