Floor insulation: warm feet, less loss

A floor that feels cold all year round reveals that heat is escaping to the space below or into the ground. Floor insulation places an insulating layer between your living space and that cold underside, so your floor feels warmer and you lose less heat. Especially on the ground floor, this makes a noticeable difference in comfort.

The approach depends heavily on what is beneath your floor. If you have a cellar or a crawl space we can access, then insulating from below is usually straightforward, without breaking open your floor.

Heat loss through the floor is less noticeable than through the roof, but the effect on your comfort is immediately noticeable. An insulated floor no longer feels cold under your feet, and the room warms up more evenly. That is pleasant in the living area, where you spend most of your time.

In addition to comfort, you also limit heat loss to the ground or to an unheated basement. How much that saves on your energy consumption depends on your home, your floor type and your heating habits, so that varies from situation to situation.

If there is a cellar or an accessible crawl space under your floor, we usually install the insulation on the underside of the floor. That is the least invasive method: you do not have to remove your floor finish and the living space remains untouched.

If there is no crawl space or it is not accessible, then insulating from the top is an option, but that means working on the floor itself. Which approach suits your home depends on the construction and the accessibility, and we assess that on site.

The biggest benefit of floor insulation is comfort: cold feet disappear and your living space feels more pleasant. You usually notice that sooner than a difference on your energy bill, although the insulation contributes to that too.
